5 Things NOT to Have on your Website
As a web hosting and web design company we have seen our share of ill-advised websites, and some that are in downright need of a make-over. Having a great site only takes some time and knowledge of what to look out for. We’ve put together five of the worst offenders found on any website.

1. The Counter.
What is a counter? It is a box that displays how many people have been to your website since it was created. This was all the rage back in 1995. It is time to lose it. If you are a marketing site (not selling through the site) then the number of sales leads you are generating is what you need to count.

If you have an e-commerce website then looking at your sales is what is important. There are many analytic reports to show you who have visited your site, how many times, and what they were searching for on your site. Please take the counter off.

2. Email Address.
If you have a business website there is absolutely no reason to have your email displayed. By putting your email address on your website you are exposing it to spammers, and anyone else who could take your email address and use it for less than noble reasons.

If you are using your email as a way for your customers to contact you on your website contact your web designer/programmer and have them create an in-take page. This page has specific fields for your customer to fill in (whatever you may need or want). Once the customer has submitted the information you will receive an email with the information. Your email address stays safe and your site looks professional.

3. Bad Backgrounds.
We enjoy color when used appropriately, but your background should never make it hard to read your content or distract from your site. This can include, but is not limited to, backgrounds with large, distracting images, backgrounds with small, distracting images, colors that blind your customers (neon yellow and green come to mind), and backgrounds that interfere with your verbiage.

Simple and clean go a long way. We are not discouraging against darker background, but the most professional and easiest for your customer to read is a white background with a dark text..

4. Font & Color.
Not every computer has the same fonts as you do. If you use a special font other than (Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma, Times New Roman, and Verdana) chances are not everyone who sees your site will see it the same way. This can cause problems and turn people off. There are ways around this general rule but please check with your web designer / programmer.

Another issue is using fonts in a color that is hard to read (yellow). Again, white background with darker font for your verbiage is known to be best. You want people to read your content, not be turned off by it.

5. Broken Links.
We’ve all fallen victim to this at least once, but it is something you need to keep up with. When changes are made check all the links. Read through your website and check each link.

This can get tedious, and you do not have to check every link every time, but by having broken links you are showing your customer that you don’t take care of your website, and that is not the image you want to portray.

All of these offenses are easy to fix and change, but can add up to a bad experience for your customer. Often times your website is the first impression of your company, so you want to make it a good one. This takes a critical eye and your site is not about you, it is about bringing customers to you.

Web Designers do not wish to create ugly or non-functioning sites, so listen to them when they suggest changes and ideas that might improve your website.
